6 Ways to Eat Protein for Breakfast That Aren’t Eggs

Protein is a helpful component of balanced meals.

It helps you feel full and satisfied after you eat for a reasonable while. Plus, if you pair carbs with protein, it slows down the absorption of glucose to help keep blood sugar (and energy) levels stable.

And of course, we need protein for tissue repair and maintenance, immune function, and more.

How to Eat More Protein For Breakfast (Without Eating Eggs)

People often ask me how to get protein at breakfast outside of eggs, so I’ve pulled together a bunch of ideas for you!

Idea #1: Greek yogurt packs a protein punch. Pair it with berries and your favorite granola or top with whole grain cereal to round out the meal. This pumpkin seed granola mixture is a yummy mix-in (or snack) too!

Idea #2: Turkey bacon, lettuce (swap in spinach or arugula for some added nutrients) and tomato on whole grain bread is delicious. Pair it with apple or pear slices (or stuff them in the sandwich) or an orange on the side for added color and volume.

Idea #3: Avocado toast on whole grain bread topped with edamame (a protein-powerhouse), feta cheese, slivered or micro greens, and sunflower seeds. Drizzle it with balsamic vinegar for some added yumminess. Serve with a side of cherry tomatoes or fruit.

Idea #4: Smoked salmon—yum 😋. I love these Food for Life English muffins (they’re hearty and have a decent amount of fiber to help fill you up). Smear a round with cream cheese, add smoked salmon and whatever veggies you like, such as spinach, tomatoes, sliced red onion, capers, basil, or anything else you can think of.

Idea #5: Smoothies are an easy place to add protein. Choose your favorite protein powder, or add nut butter, Greek yogurt, or hemp seeds (a good source of protein, fiber, and omega 3 fatty acids). Here’s a recipe for a filling and delicious peachy oats smoothie.

Idea #6: Add hemp seeds to pancakes (or waffle mixtures) and enjoy them with a side of turkey bacon or chicken sausage. If you don’t want the meat, try topping them with a drizzle of nut butter and honey. Serve with a side bowl of berries.

This is my favorite pancake mix. It happens to be gluten free but it’s yummy. I always add berries or bananas to the batter. As an alternative, check out protein-packed Kodiak Cakes pancake mixes too.
